The Anchored Workshop: A Recap
Why? Well, last week I attended an incredible workshop called the Anchored Workshop specifically for wedding photographers in the Charlotte, NC area. The workshop was hosted by none other than the ultra-talented Anchor & Veil Photography.
And. It. Was. Lit. 🔥
For three days, I learned. And learned. And learned some more. SO MUCH LEARNING. As a matter of fact, I learned so much that I came home with 12 pages of notes (handwritten notes, as a matter of fact!). We also got to take out our cameras and participate in a couple of styled shoots.
I also overcame many anxieties I had leading up to and during the workshop, and, let me tell you, I feel like a new wedding photographer now!
Let’s recap the Anchored Workshop, shall we?
Monday – Anchored Workshop Dinner
I was the first to arrive at the amazing lakefront Airbnb in Mooresville, NC on the shores of Lake Norman. Devin and Kathryn warmly greeted me, and I got my Anchored Workshop swag! My room was a cute little bedroom with two twin beds in it that I shared with Shannon, a fellow photographer from Delaware.
We all had a yummy Chipotle dinner and got to know each other. There were photographers from five different states, and several of them flew in! All of the anxiety I had about meeting Devin and Kathryn and my fellow photographers had completely melted away by the time dinner was overblown It was a nice night, and soon enough, it was time for bed.
Tuesday – Anchored Workshop Day 1
I woke up early as usual and was excited to see the sunrise over the lake. However, it was cloudy, so no sun that morning!
Devin was up bright and early working on his laptop. Soon after, everyone was awake, and Kathryn had prepared a delicious carbolicious breakfast spread!
After breakfast, it was time to learn — Anchored Workshop style! Devin wasted no time getting down to business. He warned us that he would be all over the place, and that was actually a good thing because his delivery was enthusiastic and energetic! I was feverishly taking notes in my notebook! It felt like I was in college all over again, except this classroom was a living room in a sweet Air BnB, and my desk was a comfy leather sectional.
After a delicious lunch (thanks, again, Kathryn!), another session went by. Topics covered included client experience, pricing, and albums (which I’m excited to now offer for the first time!).
My day ended with a serious case of brain mush, but I was reassured when I reviewed my copious notes!
Wednesday – Anchored Workshop Day 2
Dat sunrise, tho!
And HEADSHOTS with Devin! After our headshots, Devin commenced right away with day 2 of the Anchored Workshop. We dove into Instagram and covered SO MUCH AMAZINGNESS from Devin’s Instagram for Profit course. Four of my pages of notes were on Instagram alone! (Get thee to the Anchored Shop now, and immediately sign up for the Instagram for Profit course.)
We had a tasty Chick-fil-A lunch and then settled into that afternoon’s session. Devin offered up some website and portfolio critiques for a couple of photographers. Talk about insightful!
Wednesday afternoon also featured two styled shoots with some amazing vendors (see the end of this post for vendor love!) and two gorgeous couples!
Devin deftly schooled us on posing and how to really connect with couples during engagement sessions and on wedding days. I was in awe at his techniques (and took some serious mental notes).
Devin also went over shooting details and laying them out to make them aesthetically pleasing.
I can’t even begin to tell you how much more confident I felt after the styled shoots! I mean, my images alone will now have 1,000% more emotion and connection in them! Here are some of my favorites of Adrinne and E.C., our (real-life) engaged models. We started out in the backyard of the house. Ohhh, so smoldering!
And then they walked while bumping their hips…
And then E.C. gave Adrinne a piggyback ride! How freaking cute is this couple?!
Y’all, these two are COUPLE GOALS.
We then moved over to the dock for these extra-fiery images, with Devin coaching us on how to expertly and confidently pose couples.
Our other gorgeous couple for the styled shoot, the married-in-real-life Jessie and Austin, were equally amazing to photograph! I mean, look at the chemistry between them!
(Side note: Props to Devin and his meowtastic shirt!)
Jessie and Austin were on fire! (And look at that dreamy backlight!)
And, once again, we moved to the dock for some beautiful waterfront images.
Y’all, I can’t get over the back of Jessie’s dress!
COUPLE GOALS PART DEUX.
Oh la la…I just couldn’t with this couple’s sizzling chemistry.
After the styled shoots, we all went out for dinner at Barcelona in downtown Mooresville, where Devin and Kathryn conducted several giveaways for some sweet prizes! Alas, I didn’t win, but that’s okay! Just being there was enough of a prize for me.
After dinner, Devin showed us how he lights wedding receptions. I was happy to see that some of the gear I owned was similar to what he used! He then graciously reviewed some more portfolios, the last one of the night being mine. Was it intimidating having a master of photography review my portfolio? You betcha! But, for real, in about half an hour I learned SO MUCH about what to do and what NOT to do with my images that I will remember forever. (And, yes, you better believe I took some serious notes!)
Thursday – Last Day!
All good things must come to an end, and it was a little sad knowing the last day of the Anchored Workshop was upon us. I took advantage of the beautiful scenery that morning and meditated on the dock. Pure bliss!
Since Devin still had even more awesomeness to cover that morning, he started early. Through Devin’s teachings that morning (I learned why my Facebook and Instagram ads bombed, for example), I was able to realize the importance of learning more about SEO, blogging, and keeping careful track of receipts!
We all said our goodbyes, and one by one everyone departed the house. A few people took the time to leave a video testimonial of the Anchored Workshop, and I was one of them!
And, then, just like that, the Anchored Workshop was over.
Y’all, I was initially thisclose to backing out of the Anchored Workshop because of my anxiety (and because of the price tag, to be honest), but, in the end, I kicked my doubts and anxiety in the butt and decided to go for it.
Fellow photographers, if you’re on the fence about attending a workshop, jump in and JUST DO IT. It’s important to invest in your education as a photographer because not only will you grow as a photographer, you’ll also grow as an individual.
If the Anchored Workshop rolls around again, DON’T WAIT. SIGN UP IMMEDIATELY.
In closing, it was such a life-changing experience! I absolutely can’t wait to apply everything I learned to my business, shooting, posing, editing, couples, and more.
Thank you, Devin and Kathryn, for the Anchored Workshop and for an unforgettable experience.
